The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine originally operated up until 1931. Dug into the side of Mahanoy Mountain, it supplied rich anthracite coal to the area. One of the oldest buildings in Pennsylvania is the Packwood House Museum. Originally a hotel until 1886, the building served travelers in the Susquehanna Valley area. This museum has a collection of quilts, glass, ceramics, textiles, furniture, paintings, Pennsylvania German decorative arts and Oriental art.
